My newest favorite thing about Croatia...

I can text message America from my cell phone! And it's not expensive! How cool is that?

It was funny how I figured out I can do it. I went to the church tonight for English class, and when I walked into the building I realized the electricity was out. So... sitting in the dark at the top of the stairs waiting to see if any one was coming to class tonight, the only thing I could do in the dark was play with my cell phone. So I played a game and lost badly, so I text Nela in Bosnia, and then thought... hmmm... I wonder if I can text America. I couldn't from Bosnia, and assumed I couldn't from here either. But since I had nothing else to do, I texted my mom, my sister, and Jana... I got a message saying they were delivered, but didn't hear back from any of them... until the tram ride home when my mom texted me back! I was so excited!! Then I got an email from Jana saying she got my text - amazing! That's just a really good cheap way to get in contact with people if I need to... text them to have them call me... yeah that works :) Or if I'm sitting in a darkened stairwell with nothing to do, you may get a text from me!

So, one of my students did show up for class, and Branimir was there too, so we just went out for coffee and talked in English. The man who came tonight wrote a book, and he gave me a copy tonight. I had him sign it, and felt very cool to have an author give me a signed book. He just finished his first science-fiction novel, so I am looking forward to getting a copy of that one as well.

The cafes here are nice... some even have non-smoking sections. That's one of my favorite things as well. You can get fancy coffee here like the States... it's about as expensive as the States too! Thankfully a nice cup of decaf suits me just fine - and yes, you can get decaf in cafes. Praise God!

Branimir is coming tomorrow to help me bore holes into my concrete walls to finally hang my pictures, and to help me hang curtains. I really don't need "help" per se in hanging curtains, I am an almost 35 year old woman, mind you, however, in case you haven't noticed, I'm quite short. Yeah... and so he's also purchasing a ladder for me so I can clean my windows and reach my fuse box if need be... I hate ladders. They make me ill, but I must get over the fear :)

OK, well, I think I am going to send text messages all over America... if you hear your phone beep, just maybe it's me :)

life is so different there! one of the really bizarre things for me here is that new york is one of the states that won't even let you have smoking sections inside. the part that doesn't make sense is that everyone does it on the sidewalks. you couldn't get away from it if you wanted to. i would think that it would be preferable to have smoking sections in restaurants and all that...but what do i know?

so how much does it cost us to text you back? i get 200 text messages a month. will it use up like 5 of those, or will it show up completely separately on my bill or what?

i bet i make better fancy coffees than you can get there =)
