That dog...

Don't let that cute picture fool you. Skoobi almost lost her life today - twice.

Skoobi and I were in the yard today for about 2 hours. She was running around and then sitting in the sun, and I was reading and contemplating. Yesterday the high was 102, and the same is forecasted for today, so it was pleasant enjoying the cool of the day before the sun rose too high.

But anyways, today was garbage day and I needed to run to the store, so I put Skoobi in the house. I left all the windows open since the store is only 3 houses down. I thought Skoobi would be fine since she had already been outside for a while.

She started to pitch the biggest fit ever. Barking and whining, and screeching. Good grief. You would have thought I was torturing her or something. I just kept going though, figuring she'd calm down in in a few minutes. I was hoping my neighbors wouldn't kill me for the noise since all the windows were open. So, I unlocked the gate and took the garbage can out, turned around and relocked the gate. Skoobi is standing on the couch looking at me through the window and barking and crying her head off. I start to walk towards the store and glance up at Skoobi again. This time, she is standing with all four paws on the window ledge. I'm horrified that she is going to fall, so I race back to the gate and as I unlock it, she jumps out the window and into the yard and runs over to meet me at the gate.

So, that's the first time she almost lost her life. It's over 6 feet from the window ledge to the ground. So I get into the yard and inspect her to make sure she didn't hurt herself, and then since she was fine, I decided I was going to kill her - the second time she almost lost her life. So I dragged her to the house - she wasn't coming easily as she knew she was in trouble - and put her in the bathroom so I could calm down. I shut all the windows in the house, let her out of the bathroom and went to the store. She was still pitching a fit. I could hear her even with all the windows closed.

When i got back, me and the mutt had a long talk while we shared some ice cream. I'll close the living room window when I leave so the temptation to jump isn't there, and she won't try to figure out ways to climb up and jump out any other windows. :) Sheesh. I can't believe she jumped out the window!

By the way, I'm almost done unpacking, and as soon as I am, I'll post a video tour of the house. Hopefully by this weekend. Thanks for stopping by!

Remember I was concerned that she would get excited and jump out the window of your Zagreb apt.? I guess she knows how to gauge distance well enough. Personally, I think its a neat trick; you should given her a cookie and said "good dog." Once trained, you could just say "jump" and have her fly from the window on demand when you have guests - cool!

What I don't understand is why she is so upset about you going to the store. What's up with that?
