The following news story is from my Croatian news website -

Fired Eight Shots In Unwed Spouse

Thursday morning at 8 o’clock AM in downtown Slavonski Brod, a man armed with a pistol fired eight shots at his 35-year-old, unwed spouse, after which he turned himself in to police.

It is believed that the incident followed a short argument between the two, possibly sparked after the end of their relationship.

The woman was wounded in the chest and stomach, and after undergoing surgery, is still in critical condition.

County police confirmed that the 41-year-old used an unregistered weapon, and will be charged with attempted murder.

OK, so what exactly is an unwed spouse??

Perhaps a botched translation of the Croatian version of common-law spouse?

Yep, I'm voting for common-law. Which is more common in Canada than I'd ever suspected. Of course, "common" is in the name, so there you go--my bad.
